Eliza Stankovic, after contracting meningococcal disease at age 16 was forced to have multiple amputations, including both of her legs. For a time, she trained in track and field through the use of artificial limbs, but was later inspired to take up wheelchair sports. Within a year Eliza qualified to represent Australia in the 2002 Commonwealth Games. She placed second closely behind world record holder Louise Sauvage.
Since then Eliza has competed in multiple international events, winning more medals, breaking records, and earning a large following of fans.
I have a video of an interview / news item that Channel 7's Sunrise program aired in 2002, but unfortunately it would be illegal for me to reproduce it here. All I can really say about that is, "Neener, neener!".
